Don’t worry. I’m not some terrorist trying to quickly dispose of incriminating information. But I am interested: supposedly, it’s possible for forensics specialists etc. to recover data from a hard drive even after a zero fill. But how? If every single cluster is full of zeroes, how on earth could someone obtain information from the disc?
A space on the disk that previously had a 1 will show a slightly higher magnetic reading than a space on the disk that used to contain a zero.
Forensic specialists use analog disk reading equipement that can read the exact magnetic potential on the disk – not just a zero or a one.
