Free Data Recovery Software For External Hard Drive

does anyone know of any free data recovery software for an external hard drive?

i need to recover my data from my portable hard drive that says it needs to be formatted before i can use it.
the software needs to be free, not just a trial becaause i do not have much money

There is a freeware thing called Recover Files. I’ve used it and it’s great.
