Free Data Recovery Software Download

Is there such thing as free Deleted File Recovery software?

I know there are a lot of programs out there that scan for deleted files on a hard drive and recover them. Most of them scan for hours, show you the files, and then want 40 bucks to recover the data…

Are there any truly free ones avaliable for download that will recover the files completely, for free?
