Data Recovery Oc
Organic Chemistry Lab question concerning recrystallization?
Given the following solubility data (in grams of benzoic acid per 100 mL of water) 0.15 grams at 10ºC and 13 grams at 100 ºC, calculate how many milliliters of boiling water are required to dissolve 10 g of benzoic acid? If the solution were cooled to 10 ºC, what is the maximum percent recovery one could expect?
for the first part, I got 76.92mL i don’t know if that is correct, also, I am stuck on the second half. Any help would be great, thank you!
Your answer to the first half is OK, but too many sig figs. They probably want 77 mL for the answer.
For the second half, calculate how many grams (0.12 g) will remain in solution at 10 ºC, and figure that amount will be lost. So the recovery is about 12.88 g, which is about 99% recovery. Or, (to use sig figs more correctly), 0.12 g lost out of 13 g is about 0.9 % lost, which gives about a 99% recovery.
Fat chance you’ll really get that. Most student recoveries are in the 60% to 90% range.
