Data Recovery Ntfs Free

How do you fix/rebuild a Windows XP partition WITHOUT formatting it?

I have a single partition on a SATA drive in my PC. The partition has Windows and ALL my data (300gb of personal stuff) in the NTFS file system. I use Windows XP Professional. I just started getting BSOD’s lately and now windows won’t boot. It gets to the windows boot screen with the progress bar and then gets a blue screen as soon as it was about to show the login screen. I can’t “DIR” from from the recovery console either. Windows Installer says the partition is “Unknown” so something is funky. I CANNOT lose this data. Its my life’s work. The whole PC is BRAND new (just build it; $2k build). Booting to safe mode doesn’t hault on any drivers nor can I even boot to DOS! I used a SMART utility and all the sectors are fine on the HDD so nothing is wrong with it. There has to be a way to “rebuild” the file system/partition. Feel free to ask any technical questions as I am pretty savvy with PC’s. Thanks!

This is a surprisingly common issue with XP Pro. Anyhow:

The key to this is running the CheckDisk. Assuming that you have a standard Windows XP Pro installation media. Won’t work from a ‘Corporate’ edition. You should create a Bart PE boot disk. This is a CD that you can use to boot into the Bart PE (PreInstallation Environment). You can then use the CheckDisk program to scan your hard drive. (I have dozens of those to repair each year).

Link to Bart PE download page (it’s free) is in the sources.

This situation is generally caused by incorrect system file closure during the shut down procedure of Windows. This has nothing to do with Virus issues.

The technique given above will not damage any of your existing data – so you will not lose files because of it. Be sure to set the CheckDisk to scan for bad sectors and attempt recovery.

Good Luck.
