Data Recovery Head Crash
Data Recovery Question?
I sent my Hard Drive to a Data Recovery company & they sent it back as ‘unrecoverable’ because the head crash has scraped away the magnetic recording layer on the (Single) platter.
I know that once this layer has gone nothing can be recovered from it but I always thought that data was written to BOTH sides of a platter? Surely they could recover files from the underside of the hard drive platter which is undamaged?
The data is striped – that is, part of a word (8 bits) is written to one side, part to the other side. Assuming that the head scraped only 1 side (it will usually scrape both sides), there are only partial bytes on the unscraped side – and that’s useless. It’s like having the ink wash off a printed document and losing some of it. You have a puddle of ink – how do you “recover” the words?
