Data Recovery Freeware Deleted Files
How do data recovery companies recover data from formatted hard drives?
I don’t need to recover any data, i’m just curious:
I know there are pieces of software that can recover deleted files (and are very useful), but a formatted drive? I know ther might be slight fragments of data left, but i wouldn’t have thought you can recover a whole file.
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.co.uk/photo-recovery/ says it can recover photos from a formatted hard drive, but how do they do it? Through more advanced software? and if so, why isn’t the freeware software able to do that?

if free software can do this to the extent the company claims, then how come some companies charge £200+?
Well I can answer this pretty easily as I have a free recovery service.
Picture your computer as a desk, when you are working something its on the desktop, and its easily available. When you throw something in the trash, its still relatively easy to get to, when you “format” or throw the trash out, its put on the street basically free for anyone to take. If you need more space (writing to the drive) this can overwrite the data which was marked as “open” when you deleted it (ok so the metaphor goes south right there, bear with me). However if you don’t write to the drive, your “deleted” files sit on the curb. Many programs can bring them back, and can even work around disk scratches and other logical errors.
Where does the price tag come from when the software to do this stuff is $50-100? (the good software is…trust me, the free stuff simply does not compare) Well thats part of it right there, the other part is hiring professionals (someone to make and maintain the website, customer service, cell phones, an office, regular expenses like any company). Basically they have to screw you since they don’t necessarily have a VERY successful fast moving business, but the situation is desperate enough that people will pay. Unless they don’t want to, then I end up doing the recoveries free =p.
Also, the real recoveries (physical) as i call them, replacing platters into working hard drives requires a clean room which is expensive to build and also to maintain (filters, cleaned outfits etc etc.) Thats the kinda recoveries i can’t do.
