DON’T LOSE IT WHEN YOU LOSE DATA
Hey you, back up! And that means right NOW!
That sounds a bit like an angry policeman shouting at a suspected criminal – but if you work on a computer at home or in an office, it’s the message that you should be getting too. Quite simply – it’s a crime not to back-up your files.
Yes, it is possible to retrieve data that has been lost (in most cases – not all), there’s no guarantee for data recovery and it can be very damaging and distressing to lose vital business information or unique personal material such as photographs. Doing regular back-ups is the only way of protecting yourself against possible loss of data.
It doesn’t have to be a hassle. Think of your personal photos and how precious those memories are – and think how often we send images on the email or upload photos onto social media…. it’s become an integral part of our lives. It’s so easy to have fun with our photos – imagine life without them?..
The number one rule is to remember to back-up all files. Photos should be saved onto disc and stored safety in a separate location. Business data should be back-up via a professional automated process.
By setting up an automated back-up, businesses can select which files and folders are to be backed up, the frequency of back-up can be scheduled and the computer then automatically backs-up according to the schedule. Data is then stored off-site in a secure environment so that your business doesn’t have to be the scene of a ‘back-up’ crime again!.
Protecting vital data doesn’t cost the earth either. We asked a Perth computer repairs company for their input on what businesses and individuals can expect to pay for the peace of mind and convenience of an automated back-up solution. “Not much setting up is required” they said. Many different software packages are available that enable people to recover lost, formatted or deleted pictures if they haven’t backed them up, but it’s always advisable to consult the data recovery professionals. But if you think you’ve lost data or your discs are damaged in any way, treat it like a crime scene. Don’t touch anything!
Other points to remember if you suddenly lose data are not to write anything on the external hard drive, don’t edit any content on the hard drive and stop what you’re doing with the external hard drive immediately and call for help.
When backing up, also remember to :
· Keep back up discs in a secure place away from heat, water etc – and it’s best to keep them off-site.
· Before using the computer again after backing up, ensure that the whole process has been successfully completed. If files are changed during back up, you could corrupt the process.
· Full back-ups should be done before installing new software or software upgrades – twice a year is a reasonable option.
· If you do a lot of computer work, you should back up daily (incremental back-ups).
